It's pretty amazing to collect old black and white photographs and stereocards but it's even more fascinating to find out if the places are "still standing." Sometimes modern buildings, trees or cars prevent getting the exact angle for my then and now shots but fortunately a surprising number of structures are still there.
The use of the hands is an important symbolic element - they represent the bridge to the future between the past and the present in the comparison. They represent the human spirit in the construction of the buildings, the earthern fortifications and the forts themselves. The hands link man to his environment and are symolic of my hope for furture generations to want to help preserve "the past."
